April Mansilla, quoted by local paper as having a “false inspiration”, meaning she draws her talent in creating art from her bipolar illness. While some artists feel that expressing themselves through art is a method of meditation or relaxation, April has stated that she had felt worse about herself after completing an art piece. On the contrary, Coopers Fine Art Gallery in Toronto embraced her work and appointed her as the best emerging artist out of 40 other exhibitors.
I personally like April’s work because there are glimpses of Frida Kahlo’s artist qualities within it. From the issues of health & wellness and the uses of art as a mode of expressing herself, I can really appreciate the sentiments achieved through this painting above entitled, “The Dichotomy of My Spirit”.
